40 Years of Silence

September 16, 2015

There are many hardships in life that come with losing the ability to hear. Avaless Lungo lost her hearing when she was struck with smallpox at age 13 while growing up in Tanzania.

She had a very difficult time communicating, and eventually stopped speaking altogether. Avaless couldn’t hear the voices of her five children, which of course made it challenging to be a mother.

Living without the ability to hear also made life dangerous for Avaless after she moved to Lusaka, Zambia as she could not hear the traffic going by on the streets.

Avaless lived with these hardships for more than 40 years, until earlier this month when we were able to help her regain the gift of hearing by fitting her with hearing aids during a mission in Lusaka.

She was beyond thrilled to have her hearing restored, and very quickly began to speak again.

“It was a miracle. I couldn’t believe what was happening,” Avaless said about being able to hear again. “The first thing I did was go to church. I was singing all the songs and was able to hear what the pastor was preaching!”

Avaless now continues to live in Lusaka without the fear of not being able to hear cars passing by and grateful she can connect with her children through hearing.
