Going strong at 115

April 19, 2016

Upon meeting Manuel during Starkey Hearing Foundation’s hearing mission in the Dominican Republic, we could look at his face and know this is man with a story. Soon after, we discovered that Manuel is 115 years old. That makes him not only the one of the oldest people in the Dominican Republic, but one of the oldest people in the entire world.

Despite his advanced age, Manuel still remains quite active. He came to the hearing mission at his son’s encouragement to continue his good life with hopes of improved hearing.

He is a groundskeeper at a local cemetery, and because of his fine work, he often gets tips from people visiting the site.

Manuel’s son attributes his father’s good health to being a man who has always supported his family and served others.

A few years ago Manuel began to have hearing loss. “I brought him to the mission because he wants to enjoy his life. He has had a plentiful life and wants that to continue for as long as possible,” his son said. “Most of all I want my father to hear when we read the bible to him. That is what he enjoyed so much.”

Manuel doesn’t read, but loves it when people read to him, especially the bible.

He was in awe of the help around him as he was getting fit with hearing devices and began hearing sound. Our local team will continue to work with Manuel to ensure his devices are helping him as best they can. Our hope is that he hears the wonderful words his son says about him.

We look forward to following up with them and hearing their stories of sharing thoughts and emotions.
