Nouakchott
March 2015 Mauritania
The last mission of this run marked another first for the team, as we traveled to Mauritania in the Maghreb region of Northern Africa. Nouakchott is the capital of the desert nation, and is home to nearly 2 million citizens, many of who live a nomadic lifestyle due to poverty and lack of sufficient infrastructure.
Assisting with the mission was Dr. Mohamed Bouria from The Bin Bayyah Foundation, who generously hosted the mission at their headquarters. We received great assistance from Tarik Abasalah from Audio Morocco, and students from the University of Nouakchott also lent a hand. Dr. Bouria and team surprised us by unveiling a dedicated Starkey Hearing Foundation office in the Bin Bayyah Foundation building — a space fully equipped to host AfterCare appointments and ensure the future success of hearing health care in Mauritania.
Our first visit to Mauritania was a wonderful experience for the team, and we gave the gift of hearing to nearly a thousand patients. This may have been our first mission to the Saharan nation, but it certainly won’t be the last. With strong partnerships in place, we’re looking forward to bringing hearing to the people of Mauritania for years to come.
