Nairobi

May 2015 Kenya

After meeting with President Bill Clinton in 2010, Bill Austin made a Clinton Global Initiative commitment to action to provide 100,000 hearing aids annually to people in need — 1 million this decade. Since then, we have quadrupled our efforts. We are more than 50 percent ahead of schedule, and have expanded our model of Community-Based Hearing HealthCare around the world.

In May, President Clinton and Chelsea Clinton once again joined the team to lend their support and see our commitment progress in Nairobi.

They worked hand-in-hand with our team to provide hundreds of hearing aids to people in need, including Richard Mwendwa Kiilu, 63.

Two years ago, Richard was robbed and beaten. The assailants stole his money, but they also took his hearing. The attack left him struggling to connect to friends and family, but we changed that and were thrilled to see his smile as we gave the gift of hearing back to him.

Reflecting on his experience, President Clinton said, “They do something that nobody else is doing, and they’ve built a model that other people, who try to do a lot of good in a healthcare area for a lot of people, would be well-advised to learn from.”
