Lilongwe

May 2015 Malawi

From Uganda, we traveled south to Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi and the country’s largest city. Malawi is one of the smallest countries in Africa by land mass, as nearly a third of the nation’s area is covered by Lake Malawi. Our fitting site was located at the beautiful Peak Gardens Center, just off the banks of the Lilongwe River.

Our dedicated East African team, as well as many local volunteers from Lilongwe and surrounding towns, helped ensure a successful hearing mission. A special guest also joined our first day of fittings — Patricia Kaliati, the Malawi Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare. Kaliati gave a great speech to the crowd at the mission site, showing her support and appreciation for the Foundation’s work in her home country.

In addition to our Phase 2 fittings, we spent a day at the Mua School for the Deaf to administer AfterCare services. Located an hour and a half outside of Lilongwe, the school was bustling with energy as we reunited with students we’d fit during previous visits. The team ensured that all the students were wearing their hearing aids, caring for them properly, and addressed any issues that may have arisen through counseling services.
