April 2013 USA

Faribault School District children, ranging from 6 to 18, arrived bright and early at Foundation headquarters excited to receive the gift of hearing. Their excitement bubbled over when Minnesota Twins Justin Morneau and Scott Diamond stopped by to see them and sign autographs for the children.

Bill Austin also received a special surprise when longtime patient and baseball fan Lucas Morang, showed up with a sizable donation to the Starkey Hearing Foundation. Austin has been fitting Morang with hearing aids since he was 4. Seeing the impact the gift of hearing had on his life, Morang began raising money for the Foundation through garage sales, bake sales and carnivals. Now 14, Morang has raised more than $33,000 to help other children receive that special gift.

Morneau was so moved by Morang’s dedication and generosity that he gave the young man tickets for his family to attend that night’s game, saying, “This is amazing to me! It makes as big a difference in my life as it does in the lives of the people who benefit from it. Lucas was touched by the gift of hearing and is passing the good along. We see a lot of negativity in the world, and it is always inspiring to see good things happening. For someone who is doing so much for other people, the least we can do is give him tickets. He will bring us luck.”

Morang did in fact turn out to be good luck – the Twins beat the Angels 8-2.

Special Thanks

Justin Morneau; Scott Diamond; Faribault School District; Lucas Morang
