Check out this recent new story featured on ZNBC – Zambia’s largest television service provider showcasing the Starkey Hearing Institute and it’s great work happening in Zambia.
You've heard the phrase, "teach a man to fish." That's what we're doing with our Champions — teaching them the WFA Model and providing the necessary education to be a hearing healthcare professional.
Today, we're spotlighting Jimmy from Tanzania, who's utilizing his skills and training to start a newborn screening process within his community!
He's working tirelessly to support government hospitals in getting newborns through proper hearing care screenings, setting them up for a lifetime of hearing health and opportunity from the very start.
Recognizing hearing loss or hearing impairment early is critical in providing proper care to those in need. That's why having trained, knowledgeable Champions like Jimmy in areas with little to no hearing healthcare services is so important.
She graduated from the Starkey Hearing Institute Zambia in 2016. Since then, she's been working on implementing free hearing tests in schools in Malawi and ensuring no child is left behind in their education until they can open a hearing clinic to take over.
"I am looking to learn more about opening my own practice, even though it will be tricky. It's not easy to get the government on board because they want to see what we are doing and come along to see the impact. We are showing teachers and parents our WFA Model and getting the Minister of Health on board. I know we are doing the right thing, because the patients are the most important thing to us."
Hearing connects us to the rest of the world through shared laughter, love and life's most meaningful moments. We've seen firsthand how difficult it can be not to have access to proper hearing care.
Mary from Soroti City didn't have enough money to travel for new batteries for her hearing aids. This put her at high risk of being knocked down while at work as a street vendor. She couldn't hear the hoots and safety sounds of bikes and cars driving by.
With your support, our team of hearing healthcare providers can help people like Mary receive the Active Care they need to live their lives to the fullest.
Through our outreach event, Mary was able to receive the batteries she needed and was filled with joy to have us again in her city for Active Care.
