Away from our loved ones, we were excited to spend the day caring for children without families of their own. At our first stop, we met a young man who grew up there. Now he has a job and lives on his own, but he returns often to share his experiences with the children and to volunteer as a soccer coach. The second home we visited was for children living with HIV/AIDS. Surrounded by a loving and caring staff, these children were quick with a warm smile and a hug. The girls guided us on a tour of their dorm, where we were amused to see that, like American girls, these young ladies expressed their love for Justin Bieber by plastering his picture on their walls. Our goal was to spend Mother's Day caring for and encouraging children in need, but by the end of the day, the love they showed us changed our own lives forever.
Throughout the rest of the week, the team fit more than 4,000 hearing aids to children and adults and received an outpouring of gratitude. The faces of the children we fitted continually reminded us of our experiences at the children’s homes. No one more so than a 15-year-old girl who was not able to go to school due to her hearing loss. As soon as the team turned on the hearing aids, her look of desperation vanished and tears of hope ran down her face. She knew that she could realize her dreams of going to school and experiencing all the joys of being a teenage girl.
