January 2014 Haiti

Decimated by catastrophic magnitude 7.0 earthquake in 2010, Haiti has struggled to rebuild an infrastructure and economy that was already the poorest in the Western Hemisphere. Even with all the humanitarian aid that has poured into the country, the need across all of society has made it difficult to reach those living with hearing loss. Focusing specifically on schools for the deaf, the team, joined by partners Clinton Global Initiative and Hope to Haiti and volunteer former Los Angeles Galaxy player Tony Sanneh, gave the gift of hearing to students.

Fanatical about the sport of soccer, the people of Haiti warmly welcomed Sanneh, who returned the favor by spending quality time with the children he helped fit with new hearing aids. At each school, Sanneh worked alongside Bill and Tani Austin to ensure each of the students would have a deeper connection to the world.
