February 2014 USA

Seattle Seahawk Derrick Coleman took time the day before the Super Bowl to fit New Yorkers in need with hearing aids. Coleman, along with Garth Brooks, Joe Girardi, Larry Fitzgerald, A.J. Green, Tommie Harris, Andre Roberts, Daymond John, Barbara Bush and a host of other celebrities and pro athletes, attended our annual Super Bowl hearing mission, hosted this year by the New York Yankees. After receiving a hero’s welcome from children inspired by his story, the running back helped give patients the gift of hearing. Excited to help Coleman prepare for the biggest game of his life, the team made sure his Starkey hearing aids were in perfect working order to help lead him to victory.

“I went through all the pain, and I know that other people have too. The fact that I’m here and I didn’t make any excuses — that my parents didn’t let me — is a blessing,” said Coleman. “That’s why I like talking to kids and meeting them — to let them know I’ve been through it too.”

It was a testament to the power of the gift of hearing to witness all the incredible volunteers who took time during a busy weekend to help open up the world of sound to more than 100 people.
