Cyangugu, Kigali
May 2015 Rwanda
Earlier this year, Tani Austin and the team held trainings in Rwanda for the local Community-Based Hearing HealthCare coordinators. During the trainings, a Phase 1 mission was held as a practicum for the trainees and to take ear impressions for the Phase 2 missions. Returning to Kigali, we had the opportunity to fit these Phase 1 patients with much-anticipated hearing aids.
Among these return patients were more than 50 prisoners who had been convicted of crimes related to the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. Wearing their pink and orange jumpsuits, we stayed true to belief of using hearing as a vehicle to reflect caring to all — regardless of their backgrounds. We fit the prisoners with hearing aids, encouraging them to turn their lives around and in turn show caring to others.
