Pemba, Unguja
March 2011 Tanzania
Starkey Hearing Foundation began the day at a very impoverished deaf school facility in a small town called Pemba, a magical island just off Tanzania. The mission started out very quiet and as soon as the people of Pemba began to test their hearing ability, sounds of joy, song and laughter began to fill the tiny island. A touching experience for all of us and a beautiful island we will not forget.
The team was then off to Zanzibar, another island also off the coast of Tanzania, which is a beautiful, exotic, fast-paced town. And just as everywhere else in the world, much help was needed with hearing issues. Joined by Dr. Ron Brouillette, our partner in Zanzibar, we were able to help so many join in the world of hearing. Dr. Brouillette will also provide after care for these people. We delivered the gift of hearing to children, young adults and elderly, but regardless of their age the reaction was the same - pure gratitude. Thanks to sponsor Garth Brooks, the islands of Pemba and Zanzibar have better hearing.
